Have a positive attitude.
The power of our minds is so powerful, that everything we think and do manifests into our everyday life. For those who are reading my blog for the first time, click here if you would like to learn more about the power of our thoughts. For those of you who frequent or are aware of the power of consciousness, you understand this quite well. It is imperative that we have positive attitudes and thoughts often, as that results in our words. We must counteract negative thoughts with positive words, to ensure that we are on the right path.
There is a famous saying that states “You are the average of the five people you spend the most time around.” While we are the sum of everything that happens around us and inside us, we are most heavily influenced by those we associate with most. The people who we spend the most time around directly impact our attitudes, and while we can break free of negative cycles set by others, life is much easier to navigate when we are around people who lift us up rather than critique every little thing we do.
With this in mind, we can only control what we think, say, and do. Meditation is a very useful tool that can ultimately allow you to teach yourself when you understand the definition of meditation. There are many interpretations of meditation, and without diving too deeply into it, realize that your interpretation is what matters. We as a species are so used to blindly agreeing with the status quo so much that we defend any outliers. We defend conformity and look down upon individual perspectives quite often. I suggest you meditate dynamically, bringing every moment into a state of awareness.
As we all embark down this road of self-improvement and attitude adjustment, we must realize that we are going to mess up en route to our goals, a lot. Wherever you want your life to be in 30 years, you are going to stumble often in order to get there. If we never fall, we never change. Entrepreneur Matt Grotewold said once that “Change happens when existing life circumstances are more painful than the process of change.” We must forgive ourselves as we fall. This makes the process of change much quicker.
If you do not have a positive attitude, you will not get to a better place in life. A bad attitude means you are not only treating yourself poorly but also those around you.
Have an exceptional work ethic.
The second ability we are either born with or we develop is to be consistent in our work ethic. Being consistent and disciplined is crucial to getting to where you wish to be. Consistency and discipline are determined by you, as your ideal life is chosen by you. If your consistency persists in procrastinating and being lazy, that is where your life will take you. If your work ethic is working towards your goals and embracing your fears, you will get there. I promise you.
Society loves to put an emphasis on working hard, on being a hard, honest, and loyal worker. While the latter two terms are very valuable, being a hard worker usually correlates to putting in a lot of time. This can also be a very valuable ability, as it takes 10,000 hours to master something. However, it is important to note with all of this hard work, that we are moving toward something, and not just being busy.
With this in mind, rest is a vital aspect of working hard. We cannot go 18 hours a day for 40 years, without taking a day off(I imagine there may be someone who does that and enjoys it, but for most of us, that seems absurd). Last week I thought it would be a great idea to do that very thing, write every day and operate only on caffeine. I burned out, and it took me a couple of days to get back into the groove of things. Rest up, you need to take breaks every now and then.
As you work to build a beautiful flower bed, be aware that weeds will come up. It may not be effective to run over your garden with a tiller, scrape with a hoe, or randomly start pulling up plants. This is a sure way to ruin your hard work. Act diligently, dissect and handle obstacles when they are small before they take over. Problems are bound to happen to all of us, but those who are proactive rather than reactive get where they want in life.
Have a big dream.
How many times have you heard people say, “Money will never make you happy.” While this is a very valid point, money can take care of a lot of things that will eliminate stresses, as well as pay for experiences that you would not otherwise be able to have. Money is not the root of evil, greed is. Even then, evil and greed are products of internal misunderstandings and ultimately fear and/or sadness. Don’t blame money, check your behavior. Go make a lot of money, and take care of your family.
While having a lot of money can be fun, it is important to ask yourself if having that money is getting you closer to your dreams. Even more important, how much time is being traded to get that paycheck? What good are a million dollars if you have to work 80 hours a week to get it? Time freedom is where real wealth is, being able to live comfortably as well as on your own schedule. With the way the internet has shaped the marketplace, more and more people are earning this freedom.
If you have big goals and ambitions but aren’t fired up about them, do you actually believe you will get there? No billionaire is half in on their wealth foundation. Anyone who got there worked hard, had a good attitude, and passionately believed in their path. Passion is the power that creates courage, and courage creates results. Results bring joy, and joy brings more passion. The cycle is flexible and repeats often if you are aware of it.
To bring these thoughts to a close, ask yourself how big your dream is. My dream is to turn all nuclear weapons into nuclear energy, so that we may live on a peaceful planet that is no longer a time bomb waiting to be annihilated. We still can have competition, commerce, and all other parts of life that make us unique and yet intertwined. All we need to do is remove the weapons of mass destruction, and step down from our fearful egos.
We all want to love and be loved, and that is the bottom line to having a fruitful life.
