Human beings are free creatures, we have free will and minds of our own. But we have guidance, we are never alone.Vivid_Sydney

There is a force all around you, and also inside of you, which is, at a moments notice, ready to point you in the right direction. What is that direction? Whatever you choose. Your right path is decided by you, and only you will ever truly know what that path is. We are influenced every single day by our environment, the people around us, our past experiences, and the current moment. With the many, many choices there are to make in life, along with the mere act of survival, being alive can seem very overwhelming. This is where trust comes in.

Trust is more than a bond or connection between people, although this is first and foremost where we see trust take place. Without even the slightest sense of trust, nothing gets accomplished by anyone. Even in situations where contracts have to be written due to lack of trust, there is trust that the contract is fair, and that it will be followed. We sign internal contracts when we befriend others, trusting that we will not be deceived, trusting that there will be a balance of give and take.

Trust is not only found between people, but in every single aspect of nature, and most importantly, in yourself. Regardless of why you believe we exist, the fact that you are reading these words proves that you exist. Allow a moment of solitude, to soak up the idea that you exist.

Every breath you take shows that you trust yourself, that you hold faith deep within your being.Sydney_Harbor

There are many facets of the our consciousness, our personality, and what parts of our ego and soul originate from, but that is for another article. For now, let us observe our self judging qualities. The part of the brain that plays the biggest role in our self-analyzing is the cortex, and most importantly, the prefrontal cortex. This area is famous for taking the longest to develop, but also seems to have the most control over our lives. That is, if we allow it to.

Having trust in yourself is very important, having trust in the universe is vital. Every single moment, everything outside of us is out of our control. Other people, the weather, what is going on in the news, the fact that vegetables are healthy while ice cream isn’t, is out of your control. You did not have a choice in coming into existence; it just happened, and here you are. We can run from this, curl into a ball, doubt everything, live comfortably and never see past our fears. Or, we can step outside of our comfort zone, see that the universe, god, the spirit, energy, whatever you wish to call it, has placed the best things in life on the other side of fear.

“We can easily forgive a child who is afraid of the dark; the real tragedy of life is when men are afraid of the light.” -Plato. Life is not easy, and it only gets harder. With this in mind, we are always a micro step stronger than our next obstacle. The illusion is that we trick ourselves into thinking we are not. This way, when we overcome the challenge, we are surprised, and appreciative of our hard work. When this is known, success and growth is all but guaranteed.

We are all born with the ability to have whatever life we choose. When we choose to take action, whether that be painting, programming, making coffee, racing dogs, bearing children, or whatever it is that you enjoy, life will present you with the opportunities to make that happen. Trust that you not only have the strength to do so, but the determination to make your life yours.

A tree is a perfect exemplar of trust. Whether in a stand or alone, it grows uniquely without fear.

When you give yourself a chance to be wrong, a chance to fail, that is exactly what will happen. At first. The first time we do anything, there is failure. Even when we have years of experience, we still fail as we face new obstacles and challenges. Trust in the universe and trust in yourself is how you will attract what you desire. Trust is not as difficult as you may think. For those who have built many walls, it will take time, and courage. But a life without trust is a life of paranoia, a life of worry and constantly looking over your shoulder. Your life is and always will be your choice, and I recommend that you choose to trust yourself. It is much easier than the alternative.

So how does it work? How do you decide one day to just trust something you may or may not believe in? To start, ask questions. I ask myself what I should write about next. I then ask if I am qualified and credible to write about that particular topic. The next step is to simply do it. In my case, I write. Once you have asked your questions, and have begun carrying out said action, do it with grace and patience. Breathe slowly, deeply, and calmly. Whether you are traveling in a top fuel dragster at 300 mph, or scuba diving in the middle of the ocean, do your passion, live your life calmly and fully.

Do not panic. This is why you breathe slowly. If you can control your breath, you control everything about yourself. Having patience with yourself, with what is happening, is trusting that it will work out. Allow what is happening to happen, without judgement or fear. Once you realize that you are as much the trees, the wind, the birds and the Earth as you are yourself, you will find peace, and you will find happiness. We may go on for eternity questioning our existence, why and how and for what reason, but we cannot deny that we exist.

You can never experience nothing. No one knows what nothing feels like. This is like knowing what it felt like to have woken up after never going to sleep.

The biggest part of having trust is learning to let go. Let go of fears, of attachment, of worry. Let go of the idea that you can solve everything. Alan Watts once said that, “Problems that remain persistently insoluble should always be suspected as questions asked in the wrong way.” Slow down. Realize that you are as god just as much as the grass beneath your feet and the molecules that make up your shirt. Every single aspect of life is within the universe. There is nothing outside of the universe, nothing that is not a part of the universe. As soon as we have a thought about something, as soon as we define it, it exists, and is no longer nothing.

The biggest obstacle you will ever face is yourself. Just as water takes the shape of the container it is in, surviving in life requires moving with the current, not against it. We are all bridges for creation, and like everything else, we will cease to exist. Every choice you make now, affects how your life will be in the next 5,10,30 years. Time is our most valuable asset, so make the most of the short time you have here on Earth.

“Nature loves courage. You make the commitment and nature will respond to that commitment by removing impossible obstacles. Dream the impossible dream and the world will not grind you under, it will lift you up. This is the trick. This is what all these teachers and philosophers who really counted, who really touched the alchemical gold, this is what they understood. This is the shamanic dance in the waterfall. This is how magic is done. By hurling yourself into the abyss and discovering it’s a feather bed.” –Terence Mckenna.

    1. Thank you very much for your kind words! You are right, we do worry too much. I read something once that said, ( cannot recall who said this) “worry is trusting in the devil, If you trust and believe in “God” (universe, etc) then why are you worried?” I hope you were able to grow or smile or both from reading my article, and I hope you enjoyed your time viewing my website! Thank you Heather, best of luck to you!

  4. Hi Chris, you have some astute observations about a somewhat nebulous topic. I agree completely that trust in yourself, and the trust that others have in you, is so very important. I would add a factor that is unique to the notion of trust; once it’s lost, its very hard to get back.
    Great insights!

    1. Thank you very much! I like the word nebulous, I have not heard it used in this sense. You are very right, once trust is lost, it is very, very difficult to get back. If you are given another chance to gain someones trust back, it should not be taken lightly. This person is once again making themselves vulnerable to hurt in hopes that you do something kind for them and thus for the betterment of the relationship. It is imperative that trust is never lost, and if it is, and the relationship is even of the slightest importance, that whatever action it takes to get that trust back is carried out. Thank you for your comment!
